Chair Duets WK 3

This lesson we were showed a video of Frantic Assembly's chair duets, as well as a class theatre groups end of year performance inspired by the duets done by Frantic.

After watching the videos, we were taught 3 counts of 8 to learn, practice and eventually loop 4 times.




In groups we kept practicing the counts over and over. Several times I missed a count and got confused on some of the actions. Yet after practice as a group we used the unfocused rehearsal technique, which consisted of several of the other students to watch each of us and give us generalised improvements to make on the movements, dynamics etc.

After the first lesson of the week we were tasked with creating a separate dance grid for each set of 8. There were 5 columns: Beats/Bar, Weight placement, Action, Direction and Guidance. This allowed us to break down each of the beats and distinguish where the weight is distributed, the action itself, where the direction of your body and focus where as at times they went in different directions. Also guidance was helpful as it was extra notes, for example "sharp dynamics" or "heaviness as head drops".

  1. The use of the dance grid that is very detailed helps Meera to reproduce movement with a clear attention to detail as the grid conveys not only the actions per bar but the weight/balance of the action, dynamics and guidance and support given by the tutor. (D2)

  2. In the video (Meera Centre upstage) it is evident that Meera shows a sense of ease when perfuming the work as she is really conveying the suggested dynamics of the work. Dynamics being the last element to improve when absorbing repertoire. Her dynamics are thoroughly clear particularly in the change of direction and without the use of support from others she performs these accurately. (D2)Where a delay occurs in this video (a rare occurrence from Meera indeed) She swiftly transitions back into the work in a professional and uninterrupted manner showing the self assured confidence and control expected of a distinction candidate. This skill is only possible if a candidate has memorised the material. (D2). The performers in the video as a whole really are challenging their criteria for PMD2 as they perform in Unison which would be a relationship that highlights inaccuracies dramatically, yet this is clear evidence that all are comfortable (including Meera), are without hesitation and are accurate in the delivery of the movement with specific attention to detail such as the contrasting dynamics and the body percussion of the slaps to the thigh.
